Cursed Child Movie Trilogy and Radcliffe Rumors

Rumor has it that Warner Bros. is interested in not just a movie trilogy of Cursed Child, but is trying to snag Daniel Radcliffe for it as well!

The New York Daily News is reporting that Warner Bros. is looking into translating Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a movie on the big screen. Maybe even a trilogy because the play is already a two parter running at a total of a bit over 5 hours. The bigger news is that movie execs are said to be trying to coax Daniel Radcliffe back into the fold for the project.

Since his breakout role of Harry Potter, Radcliffe has diversified his acting roles, delving into the daring and just plain weird. Interviews with him mention his desire to break away from his blockbuster childhood actor past. However, he said that he isn’t completely opposed to returning to the role and that it would depend on the circumstances and script.

Would Radcliffe reprise his role?

Sections of the play covering the past basically recreate movie scenes on stage. Warner Bros. with its rights to previous films and a movie version of the play would be a perfect fit. Getting Radcliffe back with a little makeup and some CGI for the project would be the icing on the Harry Potter cake.

At this point in his career, acting for Radcliffe is likely all about love for the role rather than a need for money. With his likeness forever tied to the role though, it’s no surprise that WB would think he could be key to success in this potential venture. According to the NYDN article:

“Warners is secretly working on getting the movie rights and a screenplay settled, and of course in their minds only one man should be Harry,” according to a well-placed Hollywood source. “However he has made it clear that his mind is certainly not focused on returning to the role anytime soon — and that could be until he hits 40.”

This is all pretty longer term rumor and speculation though. Warner Bros. has stated they would not consider starting such a project while in the midst of filming and pushing the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. (But then again, Radcliffe, Watson and Grint won’t be the right ages to reprise the roles until the Beasts trilogy is over, so….) The potential blockbuster status is impossible to ignore.

Do you think we’ll see Radcliffe in Cursed Child on the big screen in 2020? Who else needs to return to their characters for a screen adaptation? Let’s talk in the comments!
