43. Daenerys’ Wedding Gown (Pilot)

Daenerys Targaryen has worn many beautiful outfits throughout the six seasons we have watched her come into her own over the course of the show. Dany’s wedding was the first one we sat through, and defined many things about her character. There will be wedding gowns that will trump this down the line (and in larger budgeted seasons of the show.) But hers was first.

All Dany’s costumes in the pilot are a literal interpretation of dresses described in the books, except this. This gown is the first one where Michelle Clapton went with her own idea, and it embraces on of the central features of Dany’s outfits: the simplicity of them. In later seasons, she will go on to wear a few memorable necklaces. But this establishes that, as a rule, she doesn’t go for much adornment. The show may take pains to let the viewer know this gown is given to her by Illyrio (and probably not that expensive.) But even so, she stands out in the scene from the Dothraki around her, in their brown and grey riding leathers. She is highly overdressed, in comparison to the rest of her wedding party.
