44. Doran and Trystane Martell (Season 5)

After spending a year looking upon Oberyn Martell and his exotic robes in Season 4, it was not surprisingly that once we arrived in Dorne, the  high born male clothing took their cues from those looks. Both his nephew Trystane and his older brother Doran wore variations on the theme. While his nephew might not have made much of an impression on screen as a character, his look spoke volumes. With the rich fabrics, pink and gold hues, and the gold and snake-adorned accessories, he was a younger, richer version of his Uncle. He was clearly more romantic as well, wandering around the Water Gardens holding a little flower. Dornish girls would probably scream and swoon if he strapped on whatever passes for an electric guitar in their region.

As for Doran, in this outfit, we see exactly why Oberyn dressed like that—he was copying the style of his older brother, the ruler of Dorne. Doran may not be able to stand, but that’s OK. His robes speak wealth and power, and a level of older mature confidence that no one else in Dorne seemed able to muster. Perhaps that’s why every time we set foot in Dorne in Season 5, the only time it felt like it was worth the trip was when Doran was anchoring the scene.
