5. Loras’ Armor (Season 1)
We interrupt these wedding gowns for something just as ornate and over the top: Loras’ beautiful, highly-polished, never-seen-battle, let-alone-the-glancing-blow-of-a-lance armor. Loras is wearing this the first time we meet him in King’s Landing in Season 1. If the show was looking to define him as useless from the get go, the certainly succeeded. There’s a level of parody in the look with the over the top detailing. He is called the Knight of Flowers. His armor is not only adorned with vines and floral patterns. It is actually studded with 3D metal flower appliques. And look at that helm. I mean, it’s a marvel he can see through all the swirls to take aim at his opponent on the other side of the jousting grounds.
All of this, of course, are carefully laid details to the big reveal that the dashing dandy who goes by such a silly name as “The Knight of Flowers” is, as his grandmother cheerfully says, “a sword swallower, through and through.” He’s the overweening boybander of King’s Landing’s court, who just so happens to be just as madly in love with a Prince as poor Sansa is. (I suppose we should be glad they aren’t both in love with the same prince.) Perhaps it says how dedicated to the Lancelot style fantasy that when he’s in civilian clothes, they never quite match up to the dazzle of his armor. It’s also too bad he never truly learned to fight. It would have come in handy the day the Faith Militant came to take him away.
