#4: “Lydia” by Highly Suspect on “Mister Asylum” 2015

Highly Suspect sprang onto the rock ‘n’ roll scene in 2015 with hits from their eventual award-winning album Mister Asylum. Of course, anyone who’s achieved near “overnight” success knows that you don’t just appear on any scene and find success without a lot of hard work.

Same goes for Highly Suspect. I know at one point in their early career they toured for Communion and came through Kansas City, my hometown. I saw them at one of the most intimate venues in downtown- they played most of their first and only album.

“Lydia” is that kind of angry song with a story behind it that you wish you knew and could be a part of. The video, too, makes your skin crawl a bit. And you can’t help but sing along.

It may not have been viral, but it should have been, and for those who haven’t heard the song or the rest of the album, it’s worth becoming familiar with the three-piece band. You won’t be disappointed.
