Harry Potter franchise worth a ton, but not as much as Star Wars

By one publication’s estimate, the Harry Potter franchise is worth a staggering $25 billion, which still isn’t nearly as much as Star Wars.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been out for a week now, and the box office returns are in. They’re high. Grotesquely, impossibly high. As of Christmas Eve, the movie had already raked in $517 million around the world. That’s approaching half of the $1,341,511,219 worldwide gross for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the most financially successful of the Harry Potter films. We say again: The Force Awakens crossed the $500 million mark within a week of its release. With two holiday weekends plus what is sure to be a long life in theaters to go, odds are good that it’ll beat Deathly Hallows’ numbers before all is said and done.

Fortune got it into its head to calculate the total value of the Star Wars franchise and compare it to other pop cultural phenomena, including Harry Potter. The total tally for Star Wars: a stupefying $41,979 billion, which accounts for revenue streams like box office receipts, home entertainment sales, video games, and merchandising (by far the biggest piece of the pie, incidentally—gotta have those Star Wars LEGO sets).

Fortune values the Harry Potter franchise at a paltry $25 million, which is kind of like saying the size of Saturn is paltry compared to Jupiter—they’re both really freaking big, but when you’re comparing the two biggest planets in the solar system, one’s going to come up short.

That’s another takeaway from Fortune’s analysis: of all the major pop cultural franchises out there, Harry Potter is the only one that even comes within gazing distance of Star Wars. The James Bond and Lord of the Rings franchises, for example, are valued at only $8 and $6 billion respectively.

That’s impressive for Harry Potter, considering that it’s been around for two decades less than Star Wars (the original Star Wars movie came out in 1977, while Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997). Star Wars may be in the lead now, but with a Harry Potter spinoff trilogy coming soon, who knows where the two will stand in another 20 years?
