Supergirl’s Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima Talk Representation at GLAAD Awards

The GLAAD Awards aired on April 1st and although Supergirl didn’t go home with a win, Chyler Leigh and Floriana Lima won over our hearts (yet again).

About 2 months ago, the GLAAD Media Awards nominees were announced for television, movies, comic books, and entertainment of all sorts that “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.” Among shows like Freeform’s The Fosters, The CW’s Shadowhunters, and Syfy’s Wynonna Earp, The CW’s Supergirl was nominated. The ship of “Sanvers” has taken off ever since Maggie Sawyer was introduced to the show and Alex Danvers began her coming out story after meeting her.

Fans have watched this relationship bloom throughout the entire second season of the show and it’s become a near and dear part of the fandom. What makes it even more special is that the actresses behind the ship, Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers) and Floriana Lima (Maggie Sawyer), are so passionate about how important it is. They recently attended the GLAAD Media Awards and spoke about it openly.

Chyler Leigh spoke to People and explained that she is honored to work on the show as part of Sanvers:

"“[It’s] the story of somebody who later in life, finds somebody that literally just turns their life upside down, but in the most wonderful way. They create such a vulnerability towards each other that it’s authentic. One of the greatest compliments that we get is the fact that it’s so realistic. Here we are representing a healthy, growing lesbian relationship, which you just don’t get to see. Not very often, at least.”"

And not to mention, they looked gorgeous:

Although Shadowhunters went home with the win, I believe anyone nominated for these incredible awards are winners to the viewers.
