The Rocinante Rides On: Syfy’s The Expanse Renewed For Season 3

Great news for fans of solid, serious science fiction: The Expanse is getting renewed for a third season. There’s so much more of the story left to tell.

The Expanse, Syfy’s amazing series about humanity’s colonization of our solar system, is getting renewed for a third season. It’s not so much as a surprise as a relief, because season 2 ended with the second book in the series, Leviathan Wakes. The crew of The Rocinante has many adventures ahead.

In case you’re just tuning in, the cast of The Expanse excellently explains what the show’s all about in Syfy’s aptly titled trailer, The Story:

Based on the Books

The TV show is based on the highly acclaimed, Hugo award-nominated novels by James S. A. Corey. That’s actually two different people, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. This makes sense, because The Expanse‘s expansive story needs two authors. It’s a complex narrative with multiple, fully developed and realized protagonists. The book switches among their viewpoints as they move from Earth to Mars to the Belt, and everywhere in between. According to their Reddit A.M.A., Ty writes the chapters for three characters (Holden, Bobbie and Anna) and Daniel handles the other five (Avasarala, Bull, Melba, Miller, and Prax).

Must Watch

Haven’t watched The Expanse? You really, really should.  It’s beautiful, sad, moving, and, as I mentioned, super-complex. This is no Sharknado. The Expanse is edge-of-your-seat suspense and action, so it’s a great show to binge-watch. Because it’s really hard to stop at just one. Each episode’s plot is so dense, and the characters and situations so compelling, that you don’t realize an hour has passed until the credits roll. And you’re just hungry for another and another.
