The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC Announced for Summer, Winter 2017

Our Hyrule adventures won’t end once the credits roll after March 3. Nintendo just announced DLC content for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Since its announcement at E3 2016, Nintendo has successfully raised our hype for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to a peak. The beautiful scenery, enormous world, new gameplay, and that soundtrack (!!!) have us in a tizzy over what promises to be a Zelda game like none of us have played before. While we’ve been concentrating that hype on the game’s release on March 3, Nintendo looks to expand our excitement beyond the launch day with the announcement of a DLC pack, offering more content in the summer of 2017 and again in the winter.

For $20 USD, players will gain access to three new treasure chests in the Great Plateau of Breath of the Wild, including one with a special costume for Link (it’s a shirt with the Nintendo Switch logo according to the press release, so that’s weird). These chests will be available immediately upon launch. Then, during summer of this year, the Cave of Trials will unlock for those who purchased the DLC, along with a new Hard Mode for the game and some unknown new map feature. Finally, during the holidays of 2017, the final DLC pack will unlock new story content, a brand new dungeon, and the vaguely-defined “additional challenges.”

It’s worth noting that these packs are not purchasable individually, and are only available as a unit. That said, Nintendo’s foray into the realm of actual DLC will come as a pleasant surprise to those of us frustrated by the company’s fixation on additional content delivered via plastic figurine. Hopefully, Nintendo keeps the regular DLC model for any additional content on games like Splatoon 2 or Super Mario Odyssey, launching later this year.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launches alongside the Nintendo Switch on March 3. It will also be available for the Wii U on this date, at which time the DLC packs for either version of the game will become available for purchase.
