When Star Wars first debuted, audiences heralded Princess Leia as a feminist war hero who helped save the galactic rebellion without ever piloting an X-Wing or picking up a lightsaber. She delivered some of the most quotable and sassy lines of dialogue in the entire saga. Plus, she ended up being pals with one of the coolest guys in the entire galaxy — Chewbacca.

While that all happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (I don’t think I can ever write a Star Wars piece without saying that), 2017 happens to be an equally divisive and disastrous time for the republic. Obviously, the United States finds itself in turmoil for a whole number of reasons (Why did Adele win?). But for right now, it’s at least sparked a great and unabashedly vocal new resistance. Comprised of women, LGBTQ members, racial minorities, the working and lower class … anyone who’s ever felt personally victimized by Donald Trump has spoken up.

Just like our Princess turned General Leia Organa would’ve wanted.
