Roxane Gay Puts Her Money (And Book) Where Her Mouth Is

Feminist author Roxane Gay has pulled her book from an imprint of Simon & Shuster after their deal with White Supremacist Milo Yiannopoulos.

Roxane Gay is one of the most prolific feminist authors of our generation and doesn’t shy away from controversy. Frankly, she’s busy (read: successful) and doesn’t have time to care what you think. She just decided to pull her upcoming book How to Be Heard, scheduled to be released in 2018 from TED Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. And why?

You may remember Milo Yiannopoulos from his racist attacks against Ghostbusters‘ Leslie Jones last year which eventually got him booted off Twitter permanently–quite a feat if you read the insanity that trolls say on the platform. Then he sparked outrage when he received a book deal with Threshold Editions–another imprint of Simon & Schuster.

The controversy drew criticism from many people obviously because that’s what happens when you give a White Supremacist a book deal.

A few authors signed with Simon & Schuster even expressed their disgust when the deal was announced.

But Simon & Schuster stayed their course and the deal went through. Luckily, there are still heroes in this world and today that hero is named is Roxane Gay. Gay told BuzzFeed News that she “can’t in good conscience let them publish it while they also publish Milo. So I told my agent over the weekend to pull the project.”

Can you still read this over the sounds of joy ringing out from the streets? After the news broke, Gay took to Twitter to confirm it.

Some smaller authors don’t have the luxury to pull their books from one of the biggest book publishers in the world. But Roxane Gay is here for you, don’t worry.
