19. Post World War II Fashion

Outlander Season one opens with Claire and Frank trying to reconnect after World War II. Terry Dresbach felt it is necessary to have the characters look out of fashion because they just finished fighting a war and had worn uniforms. Due to fabric rations, people were not buying new clothing after the war. Trench coats were part of men’s and women’s uniform during WW II, and many women never stopped wearing them. As the years progresses the women’s trench coat became shorter and more form fitting. Coco Channel also paved the way for women’s post-war style by making dresses shorter and less fitted. This reduces material and production cost.

She used the Scottish lush green backdrop to make the blue of Claire’s coat and the gray of Franks suit convey a somber tone while still pop on the screen. Dresbach also used accessories to show how Claire and Frank are reconnecting after being apart during the war. The brown scarf Claire is wearing, and Franks hat is a near perfect match. The blue stripes in Claire’s scarf is a near match for Franks shirt. These kinds of details are what make Dresbach the best at what she does.
